Wise Men Still Seek Him

As a teenager I was a camp counsellor. At our camp, we had the evening tradition of Vespers--an evening prayer and devotional service. This week it was my responsibility to lead the service. To get to the chapel area where we held Vespers, it was a short hike up a hill. Our group of 40 or so kids and counsellors trekked up the hill with the usual clamour that kids bring: a beautiful cacophony of chatter, laughs and roughhousing.

When we arrived at the chapel area, I asked everyone to be completely quiet for several minutes. I then asked if anyone had heard the birds singing. All nodded in agreement. For a moment we entered into another world as the melodies of the birds serenaded us, surrounding us from every direction. The beauty of the sound was mesmerizing.

I asked the crowd, “Who heard the birds as we walked up the hill?” Of course no one responded. I asked why and heard this lovely young voice respond, “because we were talking!”

The birds were singing the whole time. The reason we could now hear them, was because we took the time to listen. It was a simple message that still holds true today. In our relationship with the Father, the lover of our souls, He loves to speak to us and even sing to us. (My sheep hear my voice. John 10:27. I rejoice over you with singing. Zeph. 3:17).  When we take the time to listen, when we set aside time to be silent, we will hear His voice. When we seek Him, we will find Him.

The wisemen made it their mission to find the Saviour.

On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.  Matt. 2:11

This Christmas, let’s be wise men and women and take the time to seek Him.

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord.  Jer. 29:13,14
