Witnesses

At the Everyday Angels seminar two weeks ago, Charity Kayembe gave a significant insight into Jesus’ commission to the disciples: But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8

Charity pointed out what a witness is: one who has seen something. Many years ago, I witnessed a car accident. A car ran off the road and the driver and his passenger jumped out of the car rather quickly and ran away. All very odd. I waited for the police to arrive. They took my info. Several months later I was called as a witness. At court I learned that the car had been stolen. I was there to identify if indeed the men in court were those who I had seen running from the car.

When the Holy Spirit comes on us, we will be given the power to see. One thing we are to see is the kingdom of God. Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again." John 3:3. Seeing the kingdom of God means seeing not only the King, but the government that surrounds the King and that includes His messengers, the angels.

I have known Acts 1:8 for many years. When Jesus said to Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the earth, this speaks of a progression, from where we are at, to the local area, to a wider area and even to the ends of the earth. I have heard sermons that have used this passage encouraging us to be evangelists, starting with those closest to us, and then those in our wider circles and then to the whole world. Yes true, but one aspect that I never was taught and never saw myself, is that I am first called to be one who sees. I am called to see in the area closest to me, and then to a wider circle and then even to the whole world.

Charity emphasized that seeing angels is included in this commission. It is for all of us, not just those who are seers or those we consider to be super-spiritual. Encounters with angels were commonplace in bible: 365 times!

And you will be the ones who see…
